Our science

What is Hyperbolic Tapering?

Traditional tapering guidelines often suggest large, equal steps based on the starting dose of your medication. For example, you are informed to cut your sertraline in half over 4 weeks to go from 50 -> 25 -> 0 mg—25mg being the smallest available dose.

The problem with this approach is that not every milligram is made equal. Going from 50 to 5 mg of sertraline has approximately the same effect on your brain as going from 5 to 0 mg!

Outro’s tapering plans follow this hyperbolic curve, decreasing your dose in small steps, in accordance with its effect on the brain. This method was pioneered by our co-founder, Dr. Mark Horowitz.

FAQs

Common questions about antidepressants, tapering and Outro's services.

Who is the Taper Management membership for?

Outro’s Taper Management is for people ages 18 years and older who are currently taking an antidepressant medication and thinking about decreasing or stopping the medication altogether. Outro’s Taper Management services are not available for people in certain situations or with certain conditions. These include (but are not limited to) people who:

  • Have an active substance use or abuse concern
  • Have been diagnosed with dementia
  • Have been diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder
  • Have been hospitalized for bipolar disorder in the past
  • Have attempted to end their life in the past 12 months
  • Are actively suicidal or in crisis

Our Taper Management membership may be helpful for those who are appropriate for the delivery of care in a virtual, adjunctive model of care and who would prefer to pay a premium for close monitoring and advice from a specialty trained healthcare provider in the field of hyperbolic tapering.

To see if you are a candidate for Outro’s services, click “Get Started” to answer a brief questionnaire. Your responses to our questionnaire are not actively monitored by Outro. If you are in a life-threatening situation, call 911 or the National Suicide Prevention Line at +1-833-456-4566, or go to the nearest emergency room.

Do I need a referral from my primary care doctor?

Taper management memberships do not require a referral from your primary doctor or healthcare provider. However, with your permission, in order to determine your eligibility to receive Outro’s Healthcare Services, we may ask your primary care provider for additional information regarding your medical history. With your consent, Outro may also provide your primary care provider with a report of the Healthcare Services that you receive so that your primary care provider can take them into account.

Is Taper Management covered by insurance?

Outro’s Taper Management is not currently covered by provincial health insurance.

Why should I work with Outro to taper?

Antidepressant discontinuation is a serious process that demands specialized knowledge and attention. Grounded in first-hand experience and the latest scientific evidence, Outro's services provide the personalized guidance, support, and tools you need to minimize disruptive withdrawal symptoms or relapse, and break the on-and-off cycle that is often a result of tapering too quickly and without a proper understanding of withdrawal.

Does the membership fee cover medication costs?

Prescription costs are not included in Outro's membership fee. However, compounded medications are often covered by private insurance.

What is virtual care?

Virtual care, also referred to as telemedicine or telehealth, is a modern healthcare delivery method that allows patients to access medical services remotely via digital technology.

In the context of our services, virtual care is used to provide convenient, secure, and private access to Outro clinicians. You can communicate with an Outro provider from the comfort of your home, or wherever you might be. All of these services are designed to be easily accessed via your digital device, be it a smartphone, tablet, or computer.
